Edward Tulane is a distinguished, but vain, china rabbit. Edward’s girl Abilene loves him and he loves her right back. When Edward’s perfect life takes a turn for the worse, he learns there is more to life than trinkets and fine clothes. I really love Kate DiCamillo. Her book ‘Because of Winn Dixie’ is one of my favorites. I only recently heard of ‘Edward Tulane’. As soon I found out it is a story about a vain stuffed rabbit, I had to read it. The people Edward meets along his journey all have hard luck stories. Along Edward’s travels and with every new person he meets, Edward learns a lot about himself and the world around him. He bonds with all the people he travels with and helps fill a void in each and every one of them. In […]

‘Snobbity Snowman’ is a picture book about an unconventional and uppity snowman. In the end Snobbity learns an important moral lesson about what it means to sacrifice for others. My son and I decided to read this together. We loved the cute and quirky illustrations and we loved Snobbity as a character. The vocabulary is a little advanced so I would take this into account when reading to really young children. Altogether, ‘Snobbity Snowman’ is cute, fun, and educational and we loved it. A perfect read for the holiday season.
The Mississippi is the longest river in North America. It rises at Lake Itasca in Minnesota and flows almost due south emptying into the Gulf of Mexico, southeast of New Orléans. This is a distance of over 2,300 miles. The Mississippi River’s major tributaries are the Missouri and Ohio rivers. Many authors including Mark Twain, William Faulkner, and Kate Chopin were inspired by the mighty Mississippi. The name Mississippi comes from the Anishinaabe word ‘Misi-ziibi’ which means ‘great river’. The River flows at between 1.2 to 3 miles per hour. The Civil War Battle of Vicksburg was fought over control of the Mississippi River and was a major turning point in the war. At its widest point the river is over 7 miles wide. At its deepest spot the river is over 200 feet deep. It takes 90 days for […]
Hello from Tiny Bird’s Shelf. This is where I share books that my kids and I read together. Isosceles is a friendly dog looking for fun. He takes kids on a rhyming adventure to meet new friends. As animal lovers, our family loves anything to do with pets. When I heard about ‘Isosceles’ Day’, I knew we had to read it. We decided that Noah would read it to me. Since the prose is rhyming it made it easy and fun for him to read. The illustrations in ‘Isosceles’ Day’ are absolutely amazing. The pages are bright and colorful and the illustrations have a wonderful vintage feel. One thing that my son particularly loved, is that Isosceles is a real rescue dog that previously led a hard life. This helped the story to be absolutely endearing. […]
Here at ‘The Book Return’ blog we are excited to announce a new feature called ‘Tiny Bird’s Shelf’. ‘Tiny Bird’s Shelf’ will exclusively feature children’s picture books. My kids and I will read the stories together and let our readers know what we collectively think about the story. When I saw ‘Otis and the Kittens’ on Book Outlet I had to pick it up. ‘The Otis’ series features vibrant illustrations by Loren Long. Part of the magic of the ‘Otis and the Kittens’ is discovering all the fine details of the story displayed in the illustrations. ‘Otis and the Kittens’ features the important themes of safety, family, cooperation, and friendship. My son especially enjoyed the interactions between Otis, the kittens, and the firemen. ‘Otis and the Kittens’ offers a feel good story with wonderful illustrations. It features popular children’s themes. I […]
