Antipodes…by Michele Bacon

Antipodes…by Michele Bacon

In geography, the antipode (/ænˈtɪpədiː/) of any spot on Earth is the point on Earth’s surface diametrically opposite to it; the antipodes of a region similarly represent the area opposite it.   High school student Erin’s life is in shambles after a run of bad luck. She is worried that she will not have what it takes to get into a top college. She decides to opt for a work-study program in New Zealand to add to her résumé.   It’s evident from the beginning that Erin leads a privileged life in America. When she arrives in New Zealand she is taken aback by her host family’s small, cold, house. Erin often comes across as spoiled and bratty.   This was one of three recent books I read that take place in New Zealand. The scenery seems amazing and New […]

Dying Wish….by Margaret McHeyzer

Dying Wish….by Margaret McHeyzer

Alice is a ballet prodigy. Her best friend Becky has been like sister to Alice since Becky’s mother died. When Alice begins a relationship with Elijah she thinks her life is perfect then she receives devastating news. This novel will make you so emotional. I haven’t ugly cried over a novel since my first read of a Kristian Hannah.  I had no idea that this novel was going to be so gut wrenching. The author really brought to life the feelings of those who are close to someone who that is going through what Alice is going through. Alice as a character really touched me. I really felt that she  is someone who I would know. Becky and Elijah were still really likable for me but I Alice was a real person to me. That being said. I really love […]

Sneaking Out…By Chuck Vance

Sneaking Out…By Chuck Vance

‘Sneaking Out’ is the first installment in the ‘Chase’ series. The setting is an élite New England boarding school. Oliver and Luke are roommates at said school. They sneak out one night to meet up with girls. During this meet-up they witness a murder. They can’t confess up to what they know without being expelled for sneaking out (hence the title). The setting of a  boarding school in New England really intrigued me. It is interesting to take a peek inside their rules and routines. I hadn’t realized that boarding schools were so strict. The students have to have quiet time and are expected to do things like dress up for formal dinners. The whole atmosphere of the school seemed really rigid and creepy. The murder mystery storyline is interesting. Although I guessed the identity of the murderer early on, […]

22 Scars…by C.M. North

22 Scars…by C.M. North

Amy leads a tortured life. She has a monster for a father and a distant mother. Amy self-harms and has suicidal tendencies. Then tragedy in her life leads her in a dangerous direction.   ’22 Scars’ highlights  mental illness in teenagers. With recent events, I think a young adult book that focuses on mental health is an important thing. ’22 Scars’ did an excellent job taking on this difficult topic. I did read ’13 Reasons Why’ and found it somewhat lacking. Not only was the plot unrealistic and contrived, I don’t think that it really approaches the underling mental illnesses that drives someone to suicide. I think ’22 Scars’ approaches this subject better. Not only is Amy’s deep seeded problems explored but it also shows how her mental illness progresses through time.   ’22 Scars’ has two storylines. The connection […]

The Scent of Rain…by Anne Montgomery

The Scent of Rain…by Anne Montgomery

‘The Scent of Rain’, centers mainly around Rose. Rose is a teenager living in a fundamentalist Mormon community. The main storyline centers on Rose’s terrifying  life. The story is told through multiple points of view. The POV’s are those of Rose, Adan ,the FLDS ‘prophet’, Trak, Chase, and Brooke (Adan Trak, Chase, and Brooke are neighbors and not part of the FDLS community).   One of my favorite topics to read about is subcultures that are embedded within our own communities. ‘The Scent of Rain’ takes on the huge task of bringing to light the FLDS community. Absolutely nothing prepared me for the inner workings of the FLDS.   FLDS members never leave their small community. The women must dress, and style their hair a certain way. Young girls are forced into plural marriages with older men. Most importantly everyone must […]

Corner of Ocean and Bay… by Gina Azzi

Corner of Ocean and Bay… by Gina Azzi

Nessa and Jacie have been friends since kindergarten. When they both have had a terrible year, they decide to take up Jacie’s aunt’s invitation to stay with her at her home on the Jersey Shore. Jacie and Nessa plan to live summer to the fullest before they begin their senior year of high school . On the surface, ‘Corner of Ocean and Bay’ seams like a fun summer beach read. This novel does touch on the fun, carefree, lifestyle of teens on vacation. However, Azzi takes it a step further and explores some of the harsh realities of being young. While Nessa is the ‘good girl’ and Jacie is the wild one, both girls have their own ups and downs. Jacie and Nessa handle their romantic relationships in very different ways. Nessa takes the slow approach with the new boy […]
