Welcome Home…Eric Smith (Editor) et al.

I have mixed feelings about anthologies. Anthologies are a great way to be introduced to  new authors. However, in every anthology there are always few stories that just aren’t really my jam. I do love adoption stories so I thought I would give this one a shot. I loved almost all the stories in ‘Welcome Home’.  A lot of the stories ended on a cliff hanger. I’m not sure if this is an intentional theme or if the authors meant to leave us waiting for follow-up stories. Either way this left me wanting more from most of the authors. This is a great anthology for anyone who has been touched by adoption.     1.Carlos and the Fifteen-Year-Old Heart-Definitely unique but a little too silly for me (2 1/2 Stars) 2.Strong Enough-Super Hero story (3 Stars) 3.The Sign-Cute LGBT […]

The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle…by Stuart Turton

The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle…by Stuart Turton

The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle is a twisted mix of Freaky Friday, Groundhog Day, and Clue (yes, it’s that good). The narrator of this novel must solve the murder of Evelyn Hardcastle. Evelyn is murdered during a party hosted by her family. The twist? The narrator relives the day of Evelyn’s murder eight times. Each time he is in a different body in a different guest at the Hardcastle party.    This story is an amazing labyrinth of scenes and characters. Scenes and timelines were created 8 different times, with 8 different points of view. It is just amazing that the author is able to have a character in the right place and at the right time to correspond with previous ‘lives.’  Although the storyline is confusing at the beginning, tiny details are revealed with each new POV. These details slowly […]

Thief of Happy Endings…by Kristen Chandler

Thief of Happy Endings…by Kristen Chandler

‘Thief of Happy Endings’ is a young adult contemporary  with a huge twist. The story centers around, Cassidy. Cassidy is sent to a youth mustang training camp in Wyoming . Cassidy is there because she is having a difficult time with her parents’ recent separation. The catch is that she hasn’t ridden a horse since she was bucked off as a child. Things get more complicated when she meets junior wrangler, Justin. I loved ‘Thief of Happy Endings’. Not only is it a huge departure from most young adult romances, but it also takes on the plight of the mustang in the west. The story also demonstrates how the Bureau of Land Management really has a hard time figuring out what to do with the mustangs. Loss of freedom is a main theme in ToHE. While the loss freedom […]

Confessions of a High School Disaster…by Emma Chastain

Confessions of a High School Disaster…by Emma Chastain

Confessions of a High School Disaster is the first installment of the Chloe Snow series. I read the second installment first and enjoyed it so much that I decided to go back and read ‘Confessions of a High School Disaster’. In this book Chloe is just about to start high school. Her immaturity definitely shows through in this book. This makes sense as she is just at the beginning of both high school and her parents divorce. The combination of these two things definitely would push Chloe to concentrate on more important things than basic teenage stuff ( i.e. being a kissing virgin). I think divorce is an important topic for YA to tackle as its something many teens must work through and I think COAHSD did it well. One of the most eye-opening aspects for me was Chloe was […]

Faithful…by Alice Hoffman

Faithful…by Alice Hoffman

Seventeen year old Shelby and her best friend, Helene, are in a horrific car crash. Helene is left in a permanent coma. Shelby recovers physically but she follows a path of self-destructive behavior. Shelby’s behavior is not only a way to punish herself for the accident but also a way to form a barrier to her mental recovery.   Having read Hoffman’s previous book, ‘The Rules of Magic’, I went into, ‘Faithful’, with the impression that it would have paranormal elements. When the story begins, I thought that the story would follow both Helene and Shelby. I was pleasantly surprised when, ‘Faithful’ turns out to follow Shelby’s mental health after the crash. I’ve put off writing this review for a while. I wanted to give some thought into how I really felt about ‘Faithful’.   I really love Shelby’s story. […]

The Bone Sparrow…Zana Fraillon

The Bone Sparrow…Zana Fraillon

Subhi is born in a refugee in an internment camp. He has never seen the outside world. He has no books, no school, and not enough food, water, or clothes.   Every once in a while I stumble on a book that totally takes me by surprise. One that I haven’t heard anything about. A book that you had no idea would be so meaningful, impactful, wonderful, and life changing. One that rips out your heart, and in the process makes you a totally different person. ‘The Bone Sparrow’ is definitely one of those books. I had absolutely no idea what ‘The Bone Sparrow’ was about going in to it. Right before I started reading it, I read over the synopsis, so I had a vague idea that it was about a refuge.  I was not at all  prepared for the punch […]
