The Deal of a Lifetime…by #FredrikBackman

The Deal of a Lifetime…by #FredrikBackman

You’ll be waking up soon, it’s Christmas Eve in Helsingborg, and I’ve killed a person.     An absentee father who is more worried about making lots of money than raising his son seeks to explain his actions. It includes a Backman style twist at the end.   Fredrik Backman writes some of my favorites characters (Ove, Britt-Marie, Elsa’s grandmother). So, I was hoping for some fun and quirky characters in this short Christmas novella. I quickly found out that this was not the case. It is a story about morality and it is meant to get you thinking about what is important in life.   While not my favorite Backman book it will definitely was worth reading. At well under 100 pages, it is also a quick read. Well worth giving an hour or so of your reading time.

Britt-Marie was Here…by Fredrik Backman

Britt-Marie was Here…by Fredrik Backman

He’s small and chubby and has a head of hair like a lawn the day after an impromptu barbecue.     Britt-Marie is originally a character from Fredrik Backman’s book ‘ My Grandmother Asked Me To Tell You She’s Sorry’. When Britt-Marie leaves her cheating husband to strike out on her own, she learns it’s hard to start a new life as a sixty-something woman.   Fredrik Backman writes the most amazing characters and Britt-Marie is one of his best. She is passive aggressive, judgmental, and set in her ways. She sees everyone around her as obstacles to keeping her OCD world clean and tidy.   I loved, ‘My Grandmother Asked Me To Tell She’s Sorry.’ In that book it is so easy to dislike Britt-Marie. In ‘Britt-Marie Was Here’ we learn more of her back story and her life […]

And Everyday the Way Home Gets Longer and Longer by Fredrik Backman

And Everyday the Way Home Gets Longer and Longer by Fredrik Backman

‘We lived an extraordinary ordinary life’   ‘And Everyday the Way Home Gets Longer and Longer’ is a novella about the love one man has for his son, grandson, and wife. The man is slowly slipping into a state of memory loss. His greatest fear is that he will soon not remember any of his most beloved memories. In a letter to the reader at the beginning of the story, Backman states,’This is a story about memories and letting go. It’s a love letter and a slow farewell between a man and his grandson, and between a dad and his boy.’ He also explains that writing this story was a type of therapy for him as he too has experience with a loved one with memory loss. As I began to read this story, I soon realized that this is […]
