Holes…by Louis Sachar

Holes…by Louis Sachar

Stanley Yelnats is accused of a crime he did not commit. He is sentenced to a boys camp in the middle of a bone dry desert. The camp is ironically named Camp Green Lake. Day in and day out the boys at the camp must dig holes in the scorching heat for the warden. This story has multiple perspectives. Stanley’s present day and the past of  Stanley’s great-great grandfather as well as the past of Camp Green Lake. ‘Holes’ is much more gritty than the average middle school novel. Its is definitely not all fairies and unicorns. There are some somewhat harsh scenes in the story but they are important part of the book . ‘Holes’ is a story about overcoming adversity and a deep message about good triumphing over evil. As for the cast of characters in the novel they are […]

Lucky in Love…by Kasie West

Lucky in Love…by Kasie West

Maddie leads a normal teenage life. The only exception is her family’s money problems. So when Maddie unexpectedly wins the lottery, she thinks her problems are solved. OMG, I have all of Kasie West’s books but this is the first one I actually read. I am drawn to books about lottery winners so I was pretty sure I was going to like ‘Lucky in Love’ but I Loved it. The story was just so good. One of the things that stood out for me was how Maddie handled everything. I think it would have been easy, since Maddie was a good student and good person, to make her above splurging and using money for crazy things. However, West made Maddie true to life. Any teenager who won that much money would surely go a little crazy. I also liked how Maddie’s parents […]

Otherwise Known as Possum…by Maria D. Laso

Otherwise Known as Possum…by Maria D. Laso

‘Otherwise Known as Possum’ is a middle-grade historical fiction novel. The story takes place in the deep south during at the height of the great depression. The titular character, Possum Porter’s, mother and baby brother recently died in childbirth. Adding to Possum’s grief, her father decides to send her to the town school (up until then she had been homeschooled). Possum’s goals  become to show her daddy that she is too smart for school and to keep her teacher, Ms. Arthington, away from her father.     ‘Otherwise Known as Possum’ reminded me a lot of ‘Little House on the Prairie.’ There were major differences such as the setting and time period. However, the story just had the ‘Little House ‘feel to me. There were also obvious similarities such as ‘Mary Grace’ being the daughter of the  town store owner and she constantly teases ‘Possum’. Also, the town Possum […]
